The Irkeshtam Pass is one of the most remote and difficult border crossings in the world. At an elevation of nearly 2,800 meters (9,200 feet), it connects Xinjiang — China’s most restricted province — with Kyrgyzstan. To reach the actual border, you have to pass through a heavily militarized zone on the Chinese side that stretches for over 140 kilometers and contains multiple checkpoints, armed guards, surveillance towers, and cameras. Foreigners report thorough bag checks, intense questioning, and even phone searches. Only once you clear Chinese immigration are you driven into a DMZ stretching 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) between China and Kyrgyzstan — and from there, you must walk the entire way on foot, with no shelter, no transport, no reception, and no help. Despite all these difficulties, I decided to cross via the Irkeshtam Pass into Kyrgyzstan. Of course, I read many forums and experiences from fellow travelers who had done the crossing before. Yet, I was not prepared for what actually happened — and this day would soon turn into one of the scariest of my life.

I Tried to Cross China’s Hardest Border (it went bad)

This video documents Cori Ander's harrowing journey across the Irkeshtam Pass, one of the world's most remote and challenging land borders, from Xinjiang, China, to Kyrgyzstan. The journey begins with initial difficulties in finding transportation to the border. Cori and her travel companion, Leaken, encounter language barriers and a taxi driver attempting to scam them, adding to the stress of the already challenging situation.

Their journey continues with unexpected delays at the Chinese customs office, which is closed for several hours during the hottest part of the day, forcing them to wait under the scorching sun. Once through customs, they board a shuttle for the 140-kilometer drive to the actual border crossing, facing further police checks along the way.

The final leg of their journey involves navigating the 4-kilometer DMZ between China and Kyrgyzstan on foot. This section of the journey takes a dramatic turn when a sudden thunderstorm hits, leaving Cori and Leaken stranded in the open, facing heavy winds, cold temperatures, and constant lightning. They describe this as one of the scariest moments of their lives. Despite the challenges, their determination leads them to a surprising act of kindness from Kyrgyz soldiers, who rescue them from the storm and transport them to a nearby town.

This unexpected detour brings them to a yurt, where they encounter the hospitality of a local family, who share horse milk and bread with them. This unexpected cultural exchange serves as a powerful contrast to the difficulties faced at the border. Cori reflects on the entire experience, highlighting the unexpected challenges and the surprising moments of human connection that make the journey memorable. The video concludes with Cori and Leaken reaching their destination, exhausted but safe, emphasizing the importance of thorough planning and preparation when undertaking such a challenging journey.
