Join us on our first ever High Speed Bullet Train in China when we travel from Beijing to Xian on our Epic China Trip. We start the day in Beijing with a visit to the Temple of Heaven. The Temple of Heaven complex was visited by the Emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties for annual ceremonies of prayer to Heaven for a good harvest and it was a great place to spend an hour looking around early in the morning. We then catch the Beijing Subway back to our hotel the Renaissance Beijing Wangfujing Hotel pack our things, check out and then get the Subway again the Beijing West Train Station. Today we are going to be travelling in second class from Beijing to Xian and the journey time is just over 5 hours. Over the course of our trip to China we will be experiencing all different classes of train travel including second class, first class, business class, VIP class and even a sleeper train. We really enjoyed our time onboard this train, we all sat next to each other in a row of three seats. Along the way we passed through some amazing scenery on our journey to Xian. We spend most of the time either looking out of the window and eating all the snacks we got the night before. Once we arrived at Xian we got a taxi from Xian Train station to our hotel, the Holiday Inn Express Xian Bell Tower. The hotel is in a great central location just a couple of minutes walk to the famous Xian Bell Tower and about 5 minutes walk to the Muslim Quarter were we went to get food.

FAQs (From the traveler's perspective)

Q: What was the train ride like?
A: The second class seats were surprisingly spacious and comfortable, with plenty of legroom and reclining capabilities. There were USB ports and tray tables, just like on an airplane. The only issue was finding a place to store our luggage, but that wasn't too big of a deal.
Q: What was the food like on the train?
A: We brought our own snacks, but there was a restaurant car with a selection of food and drinks, including meat, burgers, pringles, and sweets. I tried some raspberry and blueberry Oreos, which were surprisingly good!
Q: What was the most unexpected thing that happened?
A: Probably the power outage. All the power went out for about ten minutes, including the screens and USB charging ports. It was a little worrying, but thankfully it didn't last too long and we were able to continue our journey shortly after.
Q: What was the most surprising thing about China's train system?
A: The speed of the bullet train was amazing, reaching 350 kilometers per hour! It was way faster than any trains I've ever been on back home. Also, the fact that bad behavior on the train could affect your credit score was quite surprising and strict.
