What happens when an absolutely clueless foreigner accidentally wanders around a Chinese army training base? I went into this with the full intention of telling the story of Old Yumen, the first place in China that oil was discovered. Unfortunately I didn't get very far.
Some of the vintage footage is from Daqing oil field because couldn’t find much Yumen stuff but you get the gist. Chinese oil is Chinese oil.
Mike Okay's China adventure takes a surprising turn in Yumen, a deserted oil town now a military base. His exploration of abandoned buildings and army encounters create a unique and humorous journey.

More about the current video:(Published on 2024-09-26)
This video documents Mike Okay's unplanned exploration of Old Yumen, a once-thriving oil town in Gansu Province, China, now largely abandoned and seemingly utilized as a Chinese military training base. The initial intention was to chronicle the history of Yumen, the site of China's first oil discovery in 1939. However, Mike's journey took an unexpected turn as he encountered numerous soldiers and checkpoints throughout his exploration.
The video begins with Mike entering the abandoned town and immediately noticing the presence of the Chinese army. He explores several derelict buildings, including an old school and residential structures, showcasing the town's decay and the remnants of its past. The atmosphere is palpable, a blend of intrigue and unease, as Mike navigates the deserted streets and buildings, constantly aware of the military presence.
Mike's interactions with the local residents add a personal touch to the narrative. A brief conversation with a local reveals details about the town's history, including the location of former workers' dwellings. This interaction provides a poignant contrast to the imposing military presence, highlighting the human element within this forgotten place.
The video culminates in Mike's cautious departure, having experienced a unique blend of historical exploration and unexpected encounters. While the army's presence prevented him from fully realizing his initial goal, the resulting footage offers a compelling glimpse into a forgotten corner of China, revealing a story of both industrial decline and military occupation.
The unique aspect of this video is the unexpected encounter with the Chinese military. Mike's initial focus on the historical significance of Yumen as China's first oil discovery is overshadowed by the current military use of the area. This creates a compelling juxtaposition, turning the narrative into a story of both historical exploration and unexpected adventure. The video's emotional core lies in the juxtaposition of the town's abandoned glory and its current state, and in Mike's respectful interaction with both the remaining residents and the military personnel.
