Inside A Country That Doesn't Exist On Any Map

Ruijin, the Capital That Vanished

Before the People's Republic, a small communist state existed around Ruijin in the mountains of Jiangxi, a few hundred kilometers north of Hong Kong. It lasted three years, from 1931 to 1934, with its own banks, money and government. The nationalists drove it out, and the Long March began. Matt and Julia reach Ruijin after six hours on a train from the mainland, expecting a small mountain town. Instead they find a full city with a Pizza Hut.

A Republic With Its Own Banks

At the First National Soviet Congress site, they walk through the congress hall, the news agency and the radio agency. Soviet influence was prominent, and the early USSR funded the republic. The video says it was here that Mao's cult of personality took hold, and the Long March made him the leader. The couple also drinks tea with a shopkeeper, who rinses the glasses with hot water over a drain before pouring, and buys a Russian doll before leaving.

The Ferry to Kinmen

They take a train to Xiamen, where the ferry terminal works like an airport: security, passport control, then boarding. The crossing takes about 20 minutes. Kinmen is run by a separate government with separate laws; the video says most governments do not call it another country, but it functions like one. The migration form can be filled in online, and the couple needed several attempts because the site kept crashing.

A War Still Written on the Island

On Kinmen, Google and YouTube work without a VPN and a WeChat payment fails. The island is covered with the Chinese Civil War: bullet-marked buildings, old guard posts, an old military tunnel and anti-landing obstacles on the beach. Xiamen's skyline sits 2 km away, and a new airport is being built on the mainland side just 2 km from the coast. A local woman who has lived on Kinmen for 10 years says she crosses to Xiamen often. The couple finishes by hoping for peace.
