Travel Guides & Tips in this video

  1. Tip 1Three simple rules for making delicious Chinese tea: the right ratio of tea leaves to water, appropriate water temperature, and precise steeping time are crucial for achieving the perfect flavor and aroma. Different teas require different brewing methods for optimal results. (20:43)
  2. Tip 2When ordering Rou Jia Mo (meat sandwich), specify the desired spice level. The default is often quite spicy, so asking for less pepper is advisable for those with lower spice tolerance. (9:33)
  3. Tip 3There's no tipping culture in China, making dining experiences more affordable and straightforward. Enjoy your meals without worrying about additional gratuities. (12:14)
  4. Tip 4Consider visiting the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall for a less crowded and more serene experience compared to the popular Badaling section. It offers a unique perspective and a more peaceful atmosphere. (15:13)

China Was NOT What I Expected… (Full Travel Vlog)

This travelogue follows Niki Proshin and her mother on a four-day trip to Beijing, China, a city Niki previously visited a decade ago. Their journey begins with a unique logistical challenge: coordinating flights from Cambodia and Russia, and navigating entry with transit visas. The trip is framed by a heartwarming mother-daughter bond, a recurring theme throughout the vlog.

Their exploration of Beijing starts with a stay at the Beijon Hotel, courtesy of Hyatt, where they praise the comfort and welcoming atmosphere. The video then delves into a captivating walk through the Hutongs, Beijing's unique alleyways, highlighting the juxtaposition of traditional residential life with trendy cafes and boutiques. Niki observes the everyday details of life in the Hutongs, emphasizing the uniqueness of these local interactions.

Next, they use the efficient, if somewhat unusual, Beijing subway system, noting the security measures at each entrance. Their visit to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City is marked by long queues and the sheer scale of the palace complex. Niki shares her fascination with the evocative names of the palaces within the Forbidden City, prompting viewers to consider what they would name a palace. The visit also includes a charming detour to a souvenir shop, where Niki finds unusually large postcards.

The culinary experiences are a significant part of the vlog. Niki and her mother sample a variety of dishes, from homestyle dumplings and eggplant to street food and the iconic Beijing duck. They describe the Beijing duck experience in detail, emphasizing the flavors and preparation. A particularly memorable meal is their Beijing duck lunch, described as delicious and affordable. Niki also shares her experience with less common dishes, such as duck tongue and blood soup, showcasing her adventurous palate.

The vlog then addresses the issue of air quality in Beijing, comparing the city's current air quality to what it was ten years ago. Niki highlights the improvements made by the Chinese government in addressing air pollution. The contrast between the polluted arrival day and the clear day of their Great Wall trip is striking.

Their visit to the Great Wall at Mutianyu is a highlight, offering a less crowded alternative to the popular Badaling section. Niki describes the experience as surreal, emphasizing the quiet solitude they found at this section of the wall. The climb is described as steep, and Niki points out a curious feature: tires placed along the path, prompting speculation about their purpose. The tranquility and isolation of their Great Wall experience is a stark contrast to the bustling city.

The trip concludes with a serendipitous encounter at a tea house, where they participate in a traditional Chinese tea ceremony. Niki describes the different types of tea they sample and the insightful lessons from Ellis, the tea master, on the art of brewing Chinese tea. This final encounter provides a peaceful and reflective end to their journey.

Overall, Niki's vlog offers a personal and insightful look at modern-day Beijing, highlighting both the bustling city life and the serene beauty of the surrounding areas. The mother-daughter dynamic adds a layer of emotional depth to the narrative, making it more engaging and relatable. The vlog successfully captures the unique aspects of Niki's experience, making it a compelling watch for viewers interested in China and travel.
