China's Infrastructure Is On Another Level!!

A Bridge That Ends Underwater

The first stop is an island built in the open sea, with the road running straight at the water and dropping out of sight. Cars vanish into the tunnel while the ocean sits on both sides. Lizzie says she has lived in China for almost eight years and still stops to look at projects this size.

Driving the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link

The crossing is 24 km long in total, and the tunnel section is 6.8 km. Before it opened, the drive from Shenzhen to Zhongshan took around 2 to 3 hours; now it takes about 30 minutes. The bridge and tunnel took seven years to build. She compares that with how long other countries would need and says they would not manage it in that time. Photos and videos, she adds, do not really explain the scale.

Robots You Can Control

The next stop is a robot display. A humanoid robot walks, and a robot dog answers commands. What interests her is what the machines can do for people: inspections, security, industrial work and dangerous environments, with cameras and sensors carried into places where you would not send a person. She also lists driverless cars and food delivered by drone as technology that already feels ordinary in China. Visitors can take the controls, and she says that changes how the robots read: on a screen they look like science fiction, in your hands they look like tools.

The Airport at the End of the Day

The last stop is Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport. She describes it as the final connection between the region and the rest of the world, with people, products and technology passing through every day. The seats she shows are not VIP areas; anyone can sit there. Looking back at the day, she ties the three stops together: moving people, goods and technology faster is the same problem at different scales.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link undersea tunnel is the reason the day starts where it does, and the robots and the airport show the same push for speed in a different setting.
