I spend a day exploring two beautiful old towns in Lijiang by myself. Found cute cafes, ate wild Yunnan mushrooms, took a Tibetan painting class and had yummy beef BBQ for dinner.

Lijiang, nestled in China’s southwestern Yunnan Province, is a captivating city known for its rich history, stunning natural landscapes, and diverse cultural heritage. It’s home to the Naxi people, whose ancient Dongba culture can be seen in the city’s architecture, art, and customs. Lijiang’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, features narrow cobbled streets, flowing canals, and charming wooden houses that date back centuries.

Lijiang also features Tibetan cultural influences due to its proximity to Tibetan regions in Yunnan. There are Tibetan Buddhist temples, prayer flags, and Thangka art. This is my first time trying out Thangka painting.

With its diverse ecosystems in the surrounding mountains and forests, is a haven for mushroom enthusiasts. The region is known for its abundance of wild, edible mushrooms, particularly during the rainy season from June to September. These mushrooms play a significant role in the local cuisine, featured in hot pots, stir-fries, and soups.

This video follows Tianai's Learning Channel as she embarks on a solo trip to Lijiang, a city nestled in China's southwestern Yunnan province. The journey begins with a flight to Lijiang, costing around 70-100 Australian dollars. Tianai shares her experience with the airport facilities and provides a tip for booking hotels in China: using trip.com for better reviews and a wider selection. Her hotel experience, while conveniently located near Lijiang's Old Town, is marked by cleanliness issues, leading to a recommendation against using booking.com for Chinese hotels.

Exploring Lijiang's Old Town, Tianai describes the charming cobblestone streets, unique cafes, and traditional architecture. She attempts to find a specific coffee shop but gets delightfully lost in the winding alleys instead, capturing the beauty of the canals and architecture. She eventually finds another cafe, 'Pig Style Coffee Shop', and enjoys a latte while people-watching. The cafe's interior design and ambiance are highlighted as unique and enjoyable.

Tianai's culinary journey includes a highly-rated Yunnan restaurant where she tries mushroom stir-fried rice and a mushroom hot pot. She details the unique flavors of the Yunnan mushrooms, describing them as having a meaty taste unlike any she's experienced before. The meal is described as both delicious and affordable, costing around 20 Australian dollars. Yunnan province's status as China's largest coffee producer is also mentioned.

The afternoon takes Tianai to another old town, Hushu Old Town, located up a mountain. She takes a taxi, noting the need to be dropped off at the gate due to car restrictions. Here, she participates in a Thangka painting class, describing the process, the time involved, and the specific guidelines followed in Tibetan Buddhist Thangka art. The experience is presented as both culturally enriching and physically demanding.

Finally, Tianai's day concludes with a highly-rated mushroom hot pot/barbecue dinner, where she details the various ingredients and the overall experience. The video ends with a preview of her upcoming trip to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and the Blue Moon Valley.
