This vlog follows Katherine and her two American friends, Haley and Sophia, on their first-ever trip to Shanxi province. Even Katherine, a five-year China resident, was unfamiliar with this region. Their journey began in Taiyuan, the provincial capital, which they quickly found to be less exciting than the surrounding countryside.
Their adventure took them to Wuaigong Mountain, where they were captivated by the stunning natural scenery and unique architecture. The abundance of small decorative figures adorning buildings was a highlight, and the mountain itself ranked among Katherine's top three favorite in China.
Next, they visited the Hanging Monastery, though Katherine felt it was less impressive than Wuaigong Mountain. However, the nearby town of Yongan charmed them with its local atmosphere and unique finds. They explored random alleyways, discovering hidden gems and interacting with locals.
The group then visited a wooden tower dating back to the Jin Dynasty, a surprisingly rare find for Katherine. They left offerings at the tower and continued exploring the surrounding temples, where they encountered a blend of traditional religious items and modern commercial products.
The Yungang Grottoes, a UNESCO World Heritage site, proved to be an awe-inspiring experience. The sheer number of Buddhas, some eroded by time, left them speechless. They also indulged in creative ice cream shaped like Buddhas.
Their journey concluded in Pingyao Ancient Town, a place Katherine instantly fell in love with. The unique architecture, local crafts, and charming atmosphere made it a memorable end to their trip. Katherine and her friends were particularly impressed by the preservation of original architecture, creating a sense of stepping back in time. Even the presence of a discreetly camouflaged KFC added to the charm. Katherine's friends were equally enthralled, already planning their return trip to explore more of China. The video showcases the beauty of Shanxi province, highlighting its cultural richness and natural wonders, urging viewers to explore this often-overlooked region of China.
